Distribution of personal computer software

The software system CAP88 (Clean Air Act Assessment
Package, 1988) which calculates dose and risk from radionuclide
emissions to air from Department of Energy facilities, has been
converted to personal computer format and is distributed without
charge or copy protection. Announcements on the availability of the
software have been aggressively made in electronic media such as
Internet listservers and on the World Wide Web, which has led to
increased requests for the software. Making this software available
dramatically decreases the time required to make estimates of dose
to the public, resulting in significant labor cost savings to the
government. Improvements to the CAP88-PC system have been recently
released (summer of 1994) and announced in the same fashion, and as
a result we have distributed over 150 copies of software upgrades in
two months. Copies of the software have also been posted to
electronic bulletin board systems and will be posted
on anonymous FTP sites.
