Pervasive, Human-Centric Computing

1 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002

As computers get smaller and cheaper, they will start to infest our environment. No longer will we have the option of simply walking away from them; they will be everywhere. Because computers serve a very useful purpose, we have been willing to endure their dictatorial nature ("press any key now"), their insulting manner ("If you do not want to see this message in the future, please shutdown the machine properly"), and their demonic nature (blue screen). Hopefully, this will all change as we develop a more "human-centric" way of computing.

This talk will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of several pervasive computing technolgies. The ultimate goal is to avoid replacing "the frustration of computers not doing what we want them to do," with "the frustration of computers doing what we do not want them to do."
