Music Video Event

The event is now over. The scoring details are available here.

Lyrics Archive

Teams may archive their lyrics in the lyrics archive to inspire participants in future AI Olympiads.

Rules

Videos must not exceed 15 minutes in length. There is no minimum time length.

There is no requirement that the music used be original music -- it may be someone else's music, as long as you don't distribute the video for profit :-).

The deadline for submitting music videos is anytime Saturday night before we show them at the final party (probably around 8-9 pm). Each team is responsible for submitting to me a VHS tape for viewing at the party.

If you're going to use the video editing room, don't wait until the last minute. If you've never done it before, assembling the final video from raw videotape takes at least three times longer than you think it will. If you have any doubts about this, ask anyone who participated in last year's Director's Cut event.

That's it for rules.

Scoring

Videos will be judged by a panel of judges (to be determined) according to the following criteria:

 Originality
 Participation
 Relevance to the Lab/Olympics/Olympics theme
 Overall Impression

Audio and Video Resources

Video editing room

The video editing room is now ready for use (we were waiting on some equipment, but it's here now). Nick Papadakis, editing room czar, has put together a nice tutorial describing how to use the resources in the video editing room. Nick can also usually be reached in the video editing room phone number (258-7101). If it's truly an emergency, you can try to catch Nick on his cellular phone (460-0089).

Teams are responsible for signing up to use the video editing room. You can sign up for time using the calendar on the video editing room door -- put your team name and the time slot you want on the appropriate date. Each team can only sign up for one video editing time slot at a time, and may only sign up for another time slot after their previous time slot has passed. A time limit of 6 hours per time slot will be enforced, until 24 hours before the video submission deadline, when the time limit slot will be reduced to 3 hours.

See Rodney Daughtrey if you need a key to the video editing room. I also have Betacam videotapes for you to use (you will need to transfer your video footage from your Hi-8 or DV-format videotape to Betacam videotape to do editing. Ask me if you have questions).

Video cameras

Video cameras are available from Rodney Daughtrey in Room 701.

Audio equipment

I'm offering the use of the living room of my apartment in Cambridge for recording purposes, if you should need it. There is an electronic drum setup there which will allow you to easily record drums, if needed (I'll play drums also if desired). We can probably also provide you with most recording equipment, musical instrument, or expertise needs.

Some computer-based audio editing systems (both digital audio and midi) are listed here.

One last suggestion: You should strongly consider preparing the music before you do your video editing -- it's probably easier that way.
