Recycling In the Lab

There exist a number of recycling schemes in operation in our lab. Some of them are formally set up and supported by the lab, others are maintained by students or staff. The aim of this page is to provide information about what can be recycled where.

What Can Be Recycled

Paper And Non-Corrugated Cardboard
We can now recycle all paper (white and color), envelopes (including cellophane windows), newspapers, and magazines, books, non-corrugated cardboard (e.g. cereal boxes) in the same bins! However, we cannot recycle the wrappers that reams of copier/printer paper come in. Those wrappers are coated on the inside and the coating does not dissolve. Also no paper cups (also coated) and no food-stained items.

The recycling bins are located in the usual places on 7 and 8; on 9, there is a bin behind Annie's desk, near the printer.

If you need a recycling bin for your office, please contact Jill Fekete or get one from the mail room.

Corrugated Cardboard
We recycle clean corrugated cardboard on the 7th floor -- stained pizza boxes cannot be recycled. When you take your boxes to the 7th floor, please break them down before putting them in the bin.

Deposit Cans
At the moment only deposit cans are really recycled in the lab. All of the cans and bottles that you throw into recycling boxes on the 9th floor or leave in card-board boxes on other floors, get taken by Henry and our janitorial staff. They recycle those cans they can get a refund for and throw away all the others. We still have not found a company that would recycle non-deposit cans and bottles. If you know of one, write to recycling.

Styrofoam Packing Peanuts
If you have large quantities of packing peanuts, you can take them to Mailboxes Etc. in Kendall Sq. They will be happy to take them and reuse them. If you have small quantities, you can swing by Bryt's office (253), or drop them off with Geoff in the mail room.
