Derivation of root forms: What Saami morphology tells us about
paradigm generation
Peter Svenonius
Northern Saami consonant gradations (CGs) defy simple phonological
solutions. Yet they affect roots, pervasively and productively, even
applying to new loan words. Since CG is productive, listing of root
allomorphs is not an option. Since CG is not phonologically simple, a
complex morphophonology is needed.
