Name: John C. Mallery

Institution: M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

E-Mail: JCMa@AI.MIT.EDU

Title of Interest Statement: Wide Area Collaboration and Cooperative Computing

Interest Statement: We organized this workshop so that we could get faster movement on W3 collaboration issues and bring together researchers from diverse fields who might not otherwise have the opportunity to interact. In our project, we have been working, of late, on an Electronic Open Meeting for Federal workers building on home brewed technology and written in Common Lisp (e.g. CL-HTTP). It includes a persistent database with typed links. It supports form processing over email and the WWW. It includes an advanced form definition and presentation facility. We are in the process of linking this base to machine learning techniques and natural language understanding systems. In due course, we will apply knowledge representation techniques to the WWW, and incorporate knowledge-based computations.

Title of Interest Statement: Wide-Area Collaboration and Cooperative Computing

Interest Statement: On October 31, 1994, a one-day workshop will be held at National Science Foundataion (NSF) headquarters to focus on ways in which the World-Wide Web (WWW) and its viewers/browsers such as Mosaic can be used and enhanced in support of the research communities supported by the Information, Robotics, and Intelligent Systems (IRIS), in support of the computer science research community as a whole, and in support of NSF's dissemination of program information to the research community and the public. The workshop will involve Principal Investigators (PI's) funded by each of the IRIS program areas, other WWW/Mosaic resource individuals, and IRIS staff as observers. The workshop will be chaired by Dr. James Foley, director of the Graphics, Visualization, & Usability Cener (GVU). A report summarizing action recommendations will be prepared and disseminated.

WWW presents many opportunities for the communication and collaboration within the research communities supported by IRIS as well as for the general computer science research community. In addition, the Web provides an important new way for NSF to make information available to the research community and to the public. The proposed workshop is designed to provide IRIS with a set of recommendations for planning purposes, falling in the following three categories:

  1. Recommendations concerning use of WWW as an experimental platform for collaborative efforts in the IRIS and computer science research communities, including potential enhancements to WWW in support of this.

  2. Recommendations concerning research which NSF in general and IRIS in particular should consider undertaking with respect to the WWW, its accessibility, and its usability.

  3. Recommendations on NSF information delivery to the public and research communities via WWW.

Title of Interest Statement: Race with Lotus Notes, other "closed" groupware

Interest Statement: My interest is in using and extending the WWW for true world-wode collaboration. Many large corporations are turning to closed groupware applications like Lotus Notes to help foster internal communication and information sharing. My contention is that such systems are dead ends, since they lock us into proprietary solutions, cannot be easily extended, and put too emphasis on the Local Area and not enough on the Wide Area area.

Name: David Eichmann

Institution: RICIS, University of Houston - Clear Lake

E-Mail: eichmann@rbse.jsc.nasa.gov

Title of Interest Statement: Distributed Process Modeling and Enactment via the Web

Interest Statement: The Repository Based Software Engineering (RBSE) project is a research and development program whose mission is to provide a technology transfer mechanism to improve NASA's software engineering capability. The purpose of RBSE is the support and adoption of software reuse through repository-based software engineering in targeted sectors of industry, government, and academia. The project consists of two principal activities, a repository initiative and reuse engineering initiative.

The reuse engineering initiative focuses on the support of specific software projects as they transition to a reuse oriented development and maintenance paradigm. We envision RBSE as an infrastructure for the spread of software engineering practices through the NASA community - civil servants, contractors, researchers - and out to the country as a whole. Both artifacts and processes are a critical aspect of that infrastructure. We're moving towards a corporate memory paradigm - NASA projects are long-lived and frequently outlive a given contractor team or technical monitor. Collaboration with development teams allows us to:

The repository initiative, as (in part) a provider of tools for the reuse engineering initiative, is extending its core repository technology (MORE) with process modeling and enactment mechanisms. This new functionality is a Web-based approach to representing individual, group and organizational interaction using multi-contractor software life cycle models as a problem domain.

Title of Interest Statement: Electronic Authoring and Publishing of Scientific Journals

Interest Statement: The Protein Society is sponsoring a project to publish a peer-reviewed journal on the WWW. The primary interest of this project is to design increased value into an electronic version of a journal so that people will prefer the Electronic Protein Science over the existing, printed Protein Science Journal. The intent is to set a publishing standard for electronic journals that will be useful to working scientists.

The Protein Science Web Server will enable scientists to publish articles and incorporate current information into research more quickly. Removing communication and publication barriers for scientists will increase collaboration as access to current articles and references is increased. By adopting common methodologies, i.e., SGML, scientists can access a true electronic library. Some areas of development are:

Name: Gina Faber

Institution: Teknowledge Corporation

E-Mail: gfaber@teknowledge.com

Title of Interest Statement: Distributed collaborative web authoring

Interest Statement: Teknowledge is working within an ARPA program to define and implement the Joint Task Force architecture. We are also designing and implementing one of the servers called out in this architecture: a Web Server. Its purpose is to support the rapid creation and collaborative evolution of object-oriented webs with semantic links in distributed environments. It makes use of a blackboard controller for distributed, concurrent viewing and updating of web objects. Objects may be familiar ones like hypertext, text, graphics, or unknown, often coarser-grained objects whose content and methods are supplied by other cooperating servers. For speed in prototyping and to tap into many emerging facilities, we have used the HTML/WWW standards as one basis for link addressing and hypertext objects.

Although our interest in wide-area collaboration is broad, my focus at this workshop includes the following:

Title of Interest Statement: Collaboration-in-the-large vs. Collaboration-in-the-small

Interest Statement: For the past several years, my research group have been pursuing research along two general fronts: the development of computer systems to support group activities (collaborative software), as well as research on the process of developing software in a group setting (collaborative development). Specific research projects include:

From these experiences, we have begun to recognize two fundamentally different styles of collaboration and collaborative system, which we term collaboration-in-the-large and collaboration-in-the-small.

Collaboration in the large, embodied by such systems as WWW, scales to thousands or millions of individuals. Such domain-independent scale requires a kind of collaborative "open world assumption": users do not know the answers to such elementary questions as: Who are the other users? What is the set of artifacts in the system? What has changed since yesterday? What is interesting to me? Is the information repository structurally consistent? What is user X doing right now?

In contrast, the systems built by our lab exploit the possibilities of domain-specific, collaboration-in-the-small where a "closed world assumption" holds. In our systems, in contrast to WWW, all of the preceeding questions can be readily answered, at least relative to the domain of discourse embodied in the system. The cost of collaboration in the small is its lack of scalability both technically and socially: it is unlikely that groups of more than 50 or 100 could work together effectively in our systems, or that our system could provide adequate responsiveness to larger groups. Collaboration-in-the-small does not imply geographic co-presence: Egret-based systems work well for small groups dispersed across the Internet.

Interestingly, collaboration-in-the-large vs. collaboration-in-the-small appears not to be simply a question of usage style, but has basic architectural implications. WWW is a fundamentally stateless architecture, which allows it to scale world-wide, while Egret is a fundamentally stateful architecture, which allows it to provide many useful domain-specific services not possible within WWW. An ongoing inquiry in our research is to chart out this territory and its implications. For example, what is collaboration-in-the-medium, and what are its architectural requirements?
