Experiment on Learning the Meanings of Words
Please read the following:
This experiment allows us to better understand how people learn
the meanings of new words. You will watch 13 MPEG movies where
someone uses a new word (e.g. He is gorping the balloon) in 3
different situations, followed by 4 "test" questions asking you
whether you think the new word is appropriate for the new situation
(e.g. Is he gorping the balloon?).
Your participation is voluntary. You are free to withdraw from this experiment and discontinue participation in this experiment at any time without prejudice.
You are free to decline answering any questions asked of you.
You may proceed at your own pace, but this procedure is expected to take no more than 30 minutes.
You are welcome to ask the experimenter any questions you may have about the procedures at any time.
All information collected from you will be anonymous. The data collected will be reported in such a way that the identity of all participants will be protected. Confidentiality of your data is assured.
In the unlikely event of physical injury resulting from participation in this research, I understand that medical treatment will be available from the M.I.T. Medical Department, including first aid emergency treatment and follow-up care as needed, and that my insurance carrier may be billed for the cost of such treatment. However, no compensation can be provided for medical care apart from the foregoing. I further understand that making such medical treatment available; or providing it, does not imply that such injury is the Investigator's fault. I also understand that by my participation in this study I am not waiving any of my legal rights. I understand that I may also contact the Chairman of the Committee on the Use of Humans as Experimental Subjects, M.I.T. 253-6787, if I feel I have been treated unfairly as a subject. Further information may be obtained by calling the Institute's Insurance and Legal Affairs Office at 253-2822.

Experimental Procedure
Click on each of the 13 links below to access each movie. Each movie
will last between 60 to 90 seconds. For each of the 13 movies there are
4 yes-no questions. Please record your judgment in the space provided below.
Please note that there are no correct answers and guessing is to be
expected. You are welcome to view any movie more than once. When you
are finished, please return this paper to the experimenter.
