Parries
Blocking a weapon with a sword, and so protecting yourself, is called a
parry. In the western style of combat, there are five basic
parries.
To protect your head
You raise your arm up so that the sword is parallel to the ground above
your head.
To protect your right side
You move your arm to the right, hand at about waist level so that the
sword is pointing up.
To protect your right leg
You move your arm to the right, hand at about waist level so that the
sword is pointing down.
To protect your left side
You move your arm to the left, hand at about waist level so that the
sword is pointing up.
To protect your left leg
You move your arm to the left, hand at about waist level so that the
sword is pointing down.
