To obtain relative light levels, first we let the original image diffuse for a few steps (not shown); this corresponds to first order low-pass filtering. Then we subtract the diffused image from the original, thus retaining only the components of high spatial frequency (below). On CAM-8, also this preprocessing stage can be done in real time.
